I built out my first bug-out bag and immediately realized how heavy "72 hours of supplies" actually is. I went back and rethought every single item. Weight is a decision not an afterthought..

Thoughts here. Look to what the mountain man of old carried and try an duplicate what he would carry. You will have to learn to live off the land as you can't carry everything you will need.

I could not figure out why in the current crises the dollar is so strong compared to the usual safe haven assets. And then I realized try bugging out with a hundred pounds of silver @ $80 an ounce. Much better to bug out with 20 ounces of gold @$5,000 much lighter or even currency if you think the currency is strong. Obviously, you would want to carry some money in your bug out bag and 20 ounces of gold and some currency is much better than a 100 pounds of silver.

BTW: In case anybody is wondering 20 ounces of gold is about 1-1/2 pounds and about a $100,000.

My first bug-out bag was 45 pounds. I tried hiking with it once and nearly lost it. Now I stick to 25 pounds and still move fast when I need to.

Doesn't take long to figure out what you need and don't need. My Dad said in WWII they were given a load out that would break a mule's back. He said it didn't take long before you found a big stack of gear by the side of the road as GIs started shedding gear they did not need.

Same here, you don’t realize it until you’re walking with it. Every ounce starts to matter real fast.

Yeah, reality check hits fast..value means nothing if it’s too heavy to carry when it matters.

I'm going to find out as I just ordered a wooden range box for shooting at the range. This box not only holds all my stuff but also allows me to clean the rifle.
