My buddy swears by it, says it's fine for practice. My other buddy says it'll destroy my gun. I'm confused. I've run maybe 500 rounds of steel case through my AR and it seems okay? What's the actual deal here, you guys use steel case or avoid it?

I did an AI search and here is what I found.

Yes, steel-cased ammunition can be used in most rifles, particularly AK-47s, SKSs, and many AR-15s, offering a cost-effective option for training. While generally safe, it can accelerate wear on extractors and chambers due to harder, less malleable cases that do not seal as well as brass, potentially leading to increased fouling and, rarely, stuck cases.
Key Considerations:
  • Weapon Compatibility: Steel case is fine for most rifles, but some, especially high-precision or tight-tolerance rifles, may have issues with extraction.
  • Increased Wear: The harder steel cases, often paired with bi-metal bullets, can cause faster wear on the barrel and extractor compared to brass-cased ammo.
  • Dirty Operation: Because steel does not expand to seal the chamber as tightly as brass, more carbon buildup and fouling can enter the action, requiring more frequent cleaning.
  • Range Restrictions: Many indoor ranges prohibit steel-cased ammo, as it often features steel-jacketed bullets that can damage backstops or spark.
  • Coatings: Older steel ammo uses lacquer, which can melt in hot, fast-firing rifles, while modern polymer coatings are generally safer.
While some fear it will ruin a rifle, extensive testing has shown that the money saved on ammunition often outweighs the cost of replacing parts like extractors sooner.
