Montana carry

I have been seeing a lot of talk about Montana’s constitutional carry setup lately. I like that law-abiding folks can defend themselves without extra hoops, but I’ve also seen some new carriers skip training completely. I’m all for freedom, but safety still matters. What’s everyone’s take, should constitutional carry require at least a basic safety course?

I’m all for freedom but a little training never hurts. Confidence with a gun comes from knowing it inside out, not just carrying it. Montana’s got the right idea, just pair it with good habits

When you have handled guns /tools for decades I don’t think you ever stop training so I can’t understand someone who thinks just by carrying that they are going to be able to respond/respond safely as possible/and as accurately as possible. What’s the saying if you ain’t shooting you should be moving to cover and reloading how many actually practice reloading much less while moving and under duress. Just my thoughts on the subject

Constitutional carry is fine by me, yet a short mandatory safety course makes sense. When new carriers learn safe handling, storage, and legal responsibilities, everyone benefits and risks drop sharply in practice.

While not at all opposed to training, I am vehemently against government mandated training. It's usually just a way for "instructors" to gouge people who only want to make sure they are proficient.

I totally agree, the folks who’ve been doing this a while know it’s a lifelong process. Real skill comes from repetition and staying sharp under pressure, not just carrying. I love that... train hard, live large!

Yeah, I get that. Mandatory training can easily turn into red tape or a money grab. I think it’s better when people choose to train because they actually care about being proficient.

Would not vote for mandatory training. The assumptions that would have to be made would be dangerous.

I didn’t imply mandated training I would think any rational person who chooses to carry to protect themselves and OTHERs would want working knowledge and the ability to function under nightmarish conditions and still be able to function change mags clear stoppages etc most of us know that those situations are never sought after but prepared for. My thoughts on this subject

I'm against turning any Constitutionally protected God/Nature given civil right into a government granted civil privilege. We have mandated driver schools for private and commercial drivers and if the way Montanans drive is any is any indication that isn't working out all that well. We have mandated schools to learn how to fly before one can get a license if all the crashes are any indication lately that isn't working out to well either.

However, from my observations at both my outdoor range and my indoor range voluntary range time is very active in my local and even police officers use both my outdoor and indoor range to practice so I don't think we really have to worry to much.

I would however 100% support mandatory gun safety classes in the school system. I don't care if a parent hates guns, never had one and never will, the odds that at sometime during their life a kid in America will be exposed to one or more are extremely high. They should at least know basic safety enough to spot a problem and either stop it or leave

Does that include classes run by anti-gun groups like Everytown for Gun Safety (which are a real possibility if you outsource training to the schools)? I'm asking because the sourcing of training becomes very important with things like this. Back before Montana became Constitutional carry there was a training requirement for concealed carry permits in many (if not most) counties, and the online hunter safety courses qualified. My local range also requires an online refresher training every year before your membership is activated. But, of course, training doesn't mean someone will practice good habits (witness the number of people tooling around in their 2000+ pound death machines while updating Facebook or some other nonsense).
