just grabbed my first 10/22 and wow, now i get why they're so popular! shoots pretty sweet right outta the box, but man, the customizing options are endless. not looking to go crazy right away, but i wanna add some personal touches over time. what upgrades or little mods have you all done that really changed the game for you? like, what's the best place to start?

A lot depends what you want to do with it... I have one with a cheaper scope on it and shoot on a 100 yards at the local range.. going to play on the longer distances when I get a spotting scope set up.
I keep another one with a red dot for chicken protection...we have had skunks in the hen house and a few shots from the 10/22 takes care of them..
The 10/22 is great for training or showing newbies the basics...

A friend has one with a heavy barrel, improved trigger and decent scope.....very accurate...

Stock a ton of ammo and a 10/22 could feed you on small game if times get tough....

Hello Alan:

I too am a Ruger 10-22 fan... I picked up a "vintage" carbine, and it shot well... but not great.
As a tinkerer... I looked at what to do next... better ammo, the usual springs / trigger stuff. It helped a bit, but....
I have a basement machine shop so gauged the barrel headspace and chambering, my original barrel was sloppy...
I took off 10 thou from the breech, which helped a bit, but not enough. Chamber was big...

So, I ordered a Ruger match barrel from Midway, and a Magpul Stock.... when rebuilt, my 1990?... ish 10-22 does less than about 0.3" at 50 yards and 1"-ish at 100. That's with Aquila STD VEL ammo... keep it below 1080fps... I have an old and $25 6-25X scope, cracked optics, ugly, but works, and I can literally kill flies at 50 yards.. that's with $6 a box for 50! The Ruger barrel has a tight chamber, and the stock is a much better form factor for me, I'm 6-3 and need the LOP. A really fun rifle, kind of sad that only the receiver is standard!

Cheers!

Okay this is what I did. Boyd laminated stock, Kidd trigger group, Walther 20" match barrel. About a $1,000. Leupold 3-9 power I think 22lr match scope but this scope is no longer available. Another $400-$500 for the scope. So altogether about $1500. 1/2" to 3/4" groups out to 100 yards.

Oh and a Harris bench bi-pod, about another $100 or so.
