Bullet didn't expand at all

The shot went through clean but the bullet looked like it never opened up. The deer still went down but I expected better performance, what causes bullets not to expand?

Could’ve been low impact speed or a tough angle, some bullets just act like FMJs.

I don't know f you were using a rifle or handgun or what caliber you were using. Generally a bullet has to have a velocity of a 1,000FPS or more to expand. The other cause could be to heavily constructed for the game to expand. Hard cast lead bullets don't normally expand either although they might deform some.

Could be range, angle, or heavy hide...expansion’s picky, it wants speed and resistance, not a casual pass-through.
