The Latest NRA Rifleman magazine has an article GPR (General Purpose Rifle) formerly the old Scout Rifle. Many companies are now producing a GPR. So here in Montana and being a south paw I'd pick a Ruger left-hand scout rifle in .308 Winchester or a M1A scout rifle in the same caliber or a AR-10 in the same caliber. With the .308 you can pretty take anything in Montana, a little lite the big stuff and a little heavy for small predators and varmints.

So what would you chose for a GPR for hunting and self-defense.

I lean AR-10 in .308. I built one with an 18-inch barrel and it does everything I need, from deer hunting to keeping coyotes honest around the farm. Scout rifles are neat, but I like the quick follow-up shots an AR gives.

I'd pick an AR-10 in .308 for its versatility: semi-auto follow-ups, magazine capacity, and customization. For pure simplicity, a left-hand Ruger scout is hard to beat and very reliable overall :)
